Birthday Deals!

8.11.15

This is a review of all the birthday deals I took advantage of (my birthday being in October). There is a list of birthday deals at Ozbargain if you want to know what other birthday deals there are, other than the ones mentioned in this post. I won't be going into much detail for every single deal, I'll just be mentioning things worth mentioning. So here goes.

Woolworths Online

Join Woolworths Online and you receive a $10 off voucher for online orders of $30 or more, expiring at the end of the birthday month. To get the best value, order items on special and click & collect for free rather than paying for delivery.

Gloria Jean's

Gloria Jean's gives away a free small classic coffee during the birthday month for eSippers. You're supposed to redeem by swiping your card. I went to the Melbourne Central one to get my free coffee but their iPad ( I think it's an iPad) just happened to not be working. So I ended up having to return on another day, which was annoying. But free coffee is free coffee.

Subway

Join the Subway Eat Fresh Club and you get a free six-inch sub with a drink on your birthday. This birthday deal was the most annoying to redeem out of all. The offer is only available from three days before to three days after your birthday. A short time frame. You have to activate the deal on their website, for a particular store. Then the deal becomes "active" for 12 hours and you have to redeem within those 12 hours at your chosen store. So if something comes up and you can't get to your chosen store within those 12 hours, you can't redeem the deal - which nearly happened to me. I got to my chosen store (Swanston Street) with only fifteen minutes to spare.

I'm not really a fan of Subway. They keep asking what I want to put into my sub but I have no idea because I don't know which combinations taste good. I'd checked the online menu beforehand and decided that I wanted the Chicken Parmigiana Melt. So I ordered that, but I still kept getting asked to choose. It's Subway that created the menu, so Subway employees should know what ingredients go in there. Why keep asking me? In the end, I just let the girl making the order put in whatever she wanted, including carrots.
I don't even know what's in this sub
I didn't really want to eat the sub after that so I gave it to my dad.

San Churro

Sign up for the San Churro newsletter and you'll receive a voucher for free churros for two, valued at $14.95. The offer is available on the birthday, the day before, and the day after.

I went to the San Churro at QV (my first time ever at San Churro) the day after my birthday. I showed the lady at the counter my email that I'd received from San Churro, then she asked for my ID and took down my name. I opted for takeaway so that I could take it home to eat.

My first churros from San Churro and they were delicioso, even when eaten cold. Nice and crispy, not at all sweet without the chocolate dip.

Sumo Salad

Join Sumo Society and you get a free regular size deli salad. The deal is valid for seven days from the birthday. Redeeming is easy, just hand over the loyalty card and say you want your free birthday salad. The deli salads are the pre-made ones that are on display. You can choose up to three different salads.

I've eaten salads from Sumo Salad several times before and mostly had a good experience. This time was no different. The photo might not look the most pleasing but in reality the salad was quite good.

Taco Bill

Join Club Taco and you get a free meal and a slice of birthday cake. I actually received two different vouchers from Taco Bill, one via snail mail specifically for the Epping location (I think I signed up in-store for that, not sure) and one via email that could be used at any location. The two deals were slightly different.

The Epping voucher had no fine print or terms and conditions attached and could be used in conjunction with other deals. With the email voucher, the free meal was really a buy one get one free meal deal (another full price main meal had to be ordered). I can't remember the valid dates for the email voucher because I deleted it straight away but the Epping voucher was valid until the end of the birthday month.

Epping has half price main meals from Monday to Wednesday so I made sure to go on one of those days with my parents to take full advantage of my birthday voucher.

For the drinks we ordered a coke zero and a strawberry slushie. I was mistakenly given a strawberry margarita instead of a slushie at first, but the mistake was quickly rectified.

I'd only been to Taco Bill two or three times before this and my opinion of the food from those experiences was that the only food that's worth eating there are the fajitas. So this time we all ordered fajitas. The fajita topping with salsa, sour cream and cheese has to be ordered separately.

The voucher said that I would be getting a slice of birthday cake but I got four slices, with cream, ice cream and a sparkler! Cake tasted really nice too, not too sweet.

The whole meal ended up costing only $34.45 and we were all so full after the meal! Excellent deal, excellent value. I would certainly go again next year.

Highlander Bar

Join the Highlander Clan and get a $100 voucher. A hundred dollars. It sounds too good to be true, but it really is true. This must be the best birthday deal out there by far. My parents and I had to take the train into the city but this deal was worth it.

For the drinks we ordered an orange juice, a diet coke and an apple n rhubarb fizz cocktail. I wanted a glass but the lady taking my order seemed to be busy trying to find something exactly when I said that and we ended up getting a jug (which we couldn't finish since my family doesn't drink much).

Fish and chips, and fish taco for my mum. She liked the fish and chips, said that the batter on the fish and chips was especially crispy.

Highlander burger each for my dad and me. The brioche bun was so soft and the patty so juicy. One of the better burgers I've tasted. Asked for no bacon in my burger and no salt on the fish and chips, and the chips included as a side for the burgers. No problems at all with the orders other than the cocktail.

Obviously, the Highlander would be losing money with this deal if everyone went in small groups and ate less than $100. If you feel guilty about that, then just leave a reasonable tip or bring along all your friends and eat a lot more than $100 worth. For us, all this was less than $100 so we didn't have to pay anything, but left a large tip.
